Outbreak of Hand Foot & Mouth disease in Singapore and Malaysia
Hand
Foot & Mouth is a common childhood illness and is found all over
the world. Nearly all cases are mild, involving a few days of fever,
some spots or small vesicles on the hands, feet, and inside the mouth.
All the symptoms normally disappear in just a few days without treatment.
It is caused by a type of virus of the enterovirus group, of which there
are many strains or subtype. Most cases of Hand Foot & Mouth are
found in small children aged 2 and above, just after starting school,
kindergarten or play group. It is contracted exclusively by close contact
with a sufferer.
There has been an outbreak of this disease recently in Singapore and
Malaysia, in which a small number of children died from rare complications
of this disease. The deaths were attributed to a certain strain of the
enterovirus which is currently found only in the outbreak ares of Singapore
and Malaysia. This strain has not been reported in Thailand, but the
normal, self-limiting type of Hand Foot & Mouth is found frequently
in Thailand as any where else in the world.
